Finding Inspiration at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
I’ve been a docent at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for over 15 years, and as a designer, it has been a constant source of inspiration for me. It’s amazing to see the diversity of art throughout time and cultures, yet also see the similarities. People have always been interested in creating beauty with function. Today’s concerns are not that different from people from all time periods. A Native American coat using the shape of the skin to honor an animal speaks about function, beauty, and sustainability. A 17th century rifle for the Queen of Spain, which represented the height of technology, design, and luxury, is no different than our desire to have the latest tech gadget or iPhone. From a visual standpoint, the drama of light and shadow in a Caravaggio, the stillness of a Chinese Buddha, the movement of a Pollock, the simplicity of Korean pottery, the abstraction of an African mask, the complexity of a desk from Versailles, are just a few examples of the endless sources of inspiration to draw upon as a designer.

“Good design is good problem-solving. It is wrestling with a set of programmatic, financial, or physical constraints to find the best solution.

A good designer will come up with an idea. But great designer will take that idea, put it aside, assume it is incorrect, and start all over by looking at the problem from a different perspective.

I think for every problem, there is a series of solutions. Only after evaluating them all will the best one rise to the top.”
